NPR One App Reviews

Is it me?

Im glad so many others are enjoying this app. On my iPhone 6S it frequently stalls or outright crashes. The self-promoting commercials never fail to run, though. Maybe Ill try again in a couple of months but for now its intolerable for me.

Great app but why so big?

The apps storage footprint on my phone keeps creeping up. Not clear why the cache is so large (tuneIn or Caste take up far less room).

Great app but takes up too much space

I love NPR One to listen to at night as I go to sleep. However, I have to delete it every day because it apparently caches a lot of content that kills my 16GB phone. I wish they had an option to limit the amount of storage it uses on the device.

Love it

Everything you love about NPR in one place. It plays stories that most interest me and introduces me to new podcasts based on my interests. Great way to keep up with the news no matter where you are or what time it is.

Love it!

The NPR One app is a perfect way to catch up on national and local news every day, and a fun opportunity to discover interesting, thought-provoking podcasts. Highly recommend.

Great app for my news and podcasts

NPR one is one slick app. I love the customization and the design. Not sure why others have been having so much technical trouble with the app. It works flawlessly on my 5S. Overall I would recommend this to any NPR listener.

What happened to my hourly newscast?

It doesnt pop up anymore. Mostly half hour podcasts now!

Not what I expected.

I love NPR programming, it makes my commute outright enjoyable. I had hoped to stream my local station to listen while working. If this option is available I sure havent uncovered it. I find the largest downside of the NPR One app to be the frequent self promotion ads while its strengths of course lie in the wonderful programming NPR offers worldwide. I hope that future updates will make the app more user friendly and perhaps include the option to stream local stations.

Nice but no downloads

I listen mostly on long drives that pass through no-signal areas so I need to download podcasts in advance. Wont get much use out of this app without downloads.

Sign in? No.

Yet another app that wants my personal information. Surprise. There are other ways to get news and podcasts and I already feel Im tracked enough. Im dont agree that you need my personal info to track my listening preferences -- smacks of Facebook to me. You can do that locally and dont need it on your servers. No.

Okay, not great.

I downloaded this app because I listen to so many npr podcasts. On the plus side, there are a couple local programs available through this app that arent available elsewhere. On the negative side, the npr one app user interface is clunky and difficult to use in comparison with the podcast app I usually use. Also, when I "favorited" my usual podcasts, but there was no alert when new episodes were available. I was expecting it to act like my subscriptions on the iPhone podcast app. Ill keep my regular app and only use this one for the exclusive content it has.

Too limited

Why cant I listen to morning edition? Or marketplace? Or any of the news programs that I would want from an NPR app? If I want to listen to the programs that are also podcasts, I use the Podcasts app. This app seems to only offer those shows that are also offered as podcasts, and none of the other NPR content that I would like to hear. I can search for individual segments, but cant queue the whole program...? I would be all about an NPR app if it were more flexible and all-encompassing than this one.

No reason to use

This app does not provide any benefits that you cannot get from other apps that come with the iPhone/iPad operating system. It is filled with self-reverential adds that do not appear in other formats. It does not allow you to listen to NPRs live broadcast, like "Music," does. It doesnt allow you to download shows, like "Podcasts" does. It is much easier to listen to NPR elsewhere.

Super

Thank you for allowing us to tune in to NPR and various programs and podcasts that contribute, throughout the entire day, not just when my local station have these programs scheduled. I still listen to and love my local public radio station but now I can listen and be informed when I am available. This app helps me stay informed.

Surprised!

Genuinely surprised NPR could put together such a well designed app - they clearly had a good UX/UI team! Works well too.

Pause/Play doesnt work?

Am I missing how to pick up where I left off when I get back in my car? It seems like the app restarts every time I reconnect it to my car Bluetooth, so I cant keep listening to whatever I was listening to when I got back in the car. Also not loving that I have to re-hear the cutesy pie Radiolab-esque opener every time I launch the app.

Execution is miserable

Great idea NPR, but this app is NOT ready for the public. Here are the issues: 1) I was asked to login 8 times as I navigated through the app. 2) no ability to listen at 1.5x or 2x speed 3) no queue, if you click on another show it goes to that show 4) no ability to fast forward through the episode. 5) I came for the bonus commentary from invisibilia and it cant be found. I dont have another hour to wait for the episode to scroll though to hear it, so I guess I lose. Annoying. Will delete this now.

Poor email marketing

Great concept, hate the worse-than-useless email marketing: NPR sends me an email with a teaser story that it thinks I would be interested in, and inevitably they are right, but when I click the link in the email to take me to the story, it simply launches the app--the story I want to hear not there. If I want to hear the story, I must go find it on the regular NPR website.

Ploy to push more ads

This app is just a method for pushing more ads and other irrelevant content. One particularly frustrating feature is that it often has teaser stories that sound like real stories but after about 30 seconds ask you to tap the screen to listen to the whole story. Im somewhat curious as to what happens when you tap the screen, but Im never able to get to my phone in Time to do it.

I gave it a shot.

Dont want to be forced/ pestered to login if I already state I dont want to. All the NPR One plugs between stories is annoying. Will continue to use the old NPR app for live radio, and Stitcher for following my favorite podcasts and new recommendations based on my listening.
